Harvesters Food Network

With hundreds of unorganized legacy pages, the website of Kansas City's food bank was struggling under its own weight.

A woman stands in the foreground at a Harvesters food distribution; behind her, a volunteer wheels a cart of squash down a truck ramp and people wait in line in the sun.

When Harvesters came to Clickfarm for a website refresh, it came in struggling. Every stakeholder had their own view of what they needed from the website, and it had yielded a site of over four hundred pages with no rigid structure.

Before any design could start, the job was to sift through those pages, determine which were actually being visited, and get them into a coherent structure that served the user first. I wrote the functional design spec, created the wireframes, and designed the responsive comps.

From hundreds of files in a virtually flat structure, there were only three primary actions that a normal user would take: Take action (donate, volunteer, or give food), Get help (find a food pantry or other assistance), and Learn (about the organization, its programs, and its impact). The new site design made it easy for anyone to do those three things without the clutter of a hundred other pages. Agencies that use Harvesters’ services could still find the information they need in a section dedicated to their needs.
